There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.  – Nelson Mandela. If you’re reading this, then you most likely have a child and are contemplating a divorce. And, you may be concerned about the implications a divorce may have on the support of your child.  Thankfully, the state of South Carolina provides for a helpful tool in dealing with the question of child support.

Child Support Calculator

The South Carolina Department of Social Services Child Support Calculator allows you to enter certain financial information that relates to your personal circumstances and then calculates a monthly dollar amount for child support.  It is important to input accurate financial information; otherwise, you will end up with an unrealistic or inaccurate calculation.  And, more importantly, it is key to remember that the resulting calculation is an estimate.

NOTE:  The Calculator is a tool, not a decision-maker.  And, as with most things in life, there is no such thing as a quick-fix to a complicated situation; so, the Calculator is not going to answer all the questions that revolve around your particular child support circumstance.  Ultimately, a Family Court Judge can choose to order child support amounts that deviate from the guidelines calculation and/or the parties may agree to a different amount, which must then be adopted or approved by the Family Court.
