10 Dec Tips for Stress-Free Holiday Visitation Schedules
With the Christmas and holiday season upon us, it’s an important time for parents to be aware of their court-ordered visitation schedule. Most visitation schedules change during a major holiday, especially if the children involved are of school age.
Making this time as stress-free as possible for the children involved is in the children’s best interests. Several ways to help children of divorced or separated parents have a smooth and pleasant time with both sides of their family include:
- Make the children aware of the schedule in advance. Knowledge is power, so the more the children know what to expect, the better.
- Communicate with the children’s other parent to ensure he or she is aware of any events happening with your side of the family that may affect the children’s enjoyment of the season, e.g. family illnesses, moves, or changes in tradition.
- Stay as consistent as possible with family traditions and interactions with extended family members, which helps provide stability and instill confidence in the children.
- Don’t overload your children with hectic schedules over the holidays.
